Post-tsunami reconstruction

After the tsunami, approximately 70% of the buildings on the island had been destroyed. By the end of July 2005, an estimated 850 bodies had been recovered, and an estimated 1,200 people were still missing. The total number of fatalities is unlikely to be known however local tour guides cite the figure of 4,000. Of Phi Phi Don residents, 104 surviving children had lost one or both parents.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the island was evacuated. The Thai government declared the island temporarily closed while a new zoning policy was drawn up. Many transient Thai workers returned to their home towns, and former permanent residents were housed in a refugee camp at Nong Kok in Krabi province.
However, in late January 2005, a former Dutch resident of Phi Phi, Emile Kok, set up a voluntary organization, Help International Phi Phi. Hi Phi Phi recruited 68 Thai staff from the refugee camp, as well as transient backpacker volunteers (of whom more than 3,500 offered their assistance), and returned to the island to undertake clearing and rebuilding work. On February 18, 2005, a second organization, Phi Phi Dive Camp , was set up to remove the debris from the bays and coral reef, most of which was in Ton Sai Bay.
By the end of July 2005, 23,000 tonnes of debris had been removed from the island, of which 7,000 tonnes had been cleared by hand. "We try and do as much as possible by hand," said Kok, "that way we can search for passports and indentification." The majority of buildings that were deemed fit for repair by government surveyors had been repaired, and three hundred businesses had been restored. Hi Phi Phi was nominated for a Time Magazine Heroes of Asia award .
On October 31, 2005, Deputy Prime Minister Pinit Jarusombat proposed an upgrade to the hotels and restaurants on Phi Phi Don, and a limitation to the number of tourists visiting. "It'll help us preserve its environment," said Pinit. However, after consultation with residents and land-owners, many of whom opposed the plan, the Bangkok Post reported on February 17, 2006, that the proposals would not affect Phi Phi.
As of 6 December 2005, nearly 1,500 hotel rooms were open, and a tsunami early warning alarm system had been installed by the Thai government, with the help of volunteers.

2004 tsunami

On 26 December 2004, much of the inhabited part of Phi Phi Don was devastated by the Indian Ocean Tsunami. The island's main village, Ton Sai (Banyan Tree, Thai: ต้นไทร), is mainly built on a sandy isthmus between the island's two long, tall limestone ridges. On both sides of Ton Sai are semicircular bays lined with beaches. The isthmus rises to less than two metres (six feet) above sea level.

Shortly after 10 am on the morning of 26 December, the water from both bays receded. When the tsunami hit, at 10.37 am, it did so from both bays, and met in the middle of the isthmus. The wave that came into Ton Sai Bay was 3 metres (10 feet) high. The wave that came into Loh Dalum Bay was 6.5 metres (18 feet) high. The force of the larger wave from Loh Dalum Bay pushed debris south-westwards into Ton Sai Bay.
The tsunami also breached low-lying areas in the limestone karsts, passing from Laa Naa Bay to Bakhao Bay, and at Laem Thong (Sea Gypsy Village), where 11 people died. Apart from these breaches, the eastern side of the island experienced only flooding and strong currents.
At the time of the tsunami, the island had an estimated 10,000 occupants, including tourists.
The Phi Phi Islands (Thai: หมู่เกาะพีพี) are located in Thailand, between the large island of Phuket and the western Andaman Sea coast of the mainland. Phi Phi Don, the larger and principal of the two Phi Phi islands, is located at 7°44′00″N, 98°46′00″E. Both Phi Phi Don, and Phi Phi Leh, the smaller, are administratively part of Krabi province, most of which is on the mainland, and is located at 8°02′30″N, 98°48′39″E.

Ko Phi Phi Don ("ko" (Thai: เกาะ) meaning "island" in the Thai language) is the largest island of the group, and is the only island with permanent inhabitants, although the beaches of the second largest island, Ko Phi Phi Lee (or "Ko Phi Phi Leh"), are visited by many people as well. There are no accommodation facilities on this island, but it is just a short boat ride from Ko Phi Phi Don. The rest of the islands in the group, including Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island, are not much more than large limestone rocks jutting out of the sea.

Phi Phi Don was initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the late 1940s, and later became a coconut plantation. The Thai population of Phi Phi Don remains more than 80% Muslim.

Ko Phi Phi Leh was the backdrop for the 2000 movie The Beach. Phi Phi Leh also houses the 'Viking Cave', from which there is a thriving bird's nest soup industry. There was criticism during filming of 'The Beach' that the permission granted to the film company to physically alter the environment inside Phi Phi Islands National Park was illegal.
Following the release of The Beach, tourism on Phi Phi Don increased dramatically, and with it the population of the island. Many buildings were constructed without planning permission.

An archipelago of six islands consists of Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Le as the major islands. The superb scenery of the islands includes high hills with jutting cliffs surrounded by marvelous beaches and emerald sea, hiding underneath a bank of coral reefs and colorful marine life. Places to visit of Mu Koh Phi Phi include

covers a total area of 28 square kilometers : 8 kilometers in length and 3.5 at its broadest point. At the north end is Cape Laem Thong, where there is a Chao Ley, or sea gipsy village. These sea gypsies emigrated from Koh Lipeh in Tarutao National Park, near the border with Malaysia. Diving at Laem Thong is excellent, as it is also at Hua Rah Ket to the extreme south. There are long beaches with rocks scattered about. Two curving bays are especially beautiful : Ton Sai and Loh Dalam. This is also where accommodations and tourist services are found.
is 6.6 square kilometers in total area : 3 kilometers in length and 1 at its broadest point. The island is entirely limestone and steep cliffs rising from the sea very nearly ring it. Surrounding waters averageabout 20 meters in depth, reaching 34 meters at the deepest point off the island's southern tip. Phi Phi Ley has several beautiful bays : Pileh, Maya and Loh Samah ; Ao Pileh is very nearly enclosed by the limestone walls of the island's cliffs, so that the water appears almost to be an island sea. On Phi Phi Ley's northeast is the famous Viking Cave; this was renamed by H.M.Rama IX when he visited it in 1972, Tam Pya Nak, from the shape of a particular boulder, which resembles in shape the head of the great serpent of Buddhist legend, the Naga. It is a place much revered by the local people who come there to collect the swift's nests used to make Bird's Nest Soup, a Chinese delicacy. On the eastern and southern walls of the cave are colored drawings dating from historic times. There are pictures of elephants and also of various boats : European, Arab and Chinese sailing ships ; baroques, motorboats, and steamships. It is theorized that these pirates who paused in their travels from west to east, sheltering in the cave to escape the monsoon winds, transfer cargo, or make repairs. Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort & Sp, Phi Phi Island, Loh Ba Gao BayVery secluded and peaceful. The Bungalows and the new swimming pool were fab, the restaurant menus were extensive and the staff very polite and helpful. We had a great week and stayed an extra day. Not for you however if you want a nightlife and shopping - it just does not exist at this resort!

Pee Pee Island Village Beach Resort & Sp, Phi Phi Island, Loh Ba Gao BayPEE PEE ISLAND VILLAGE RESORT IS A LITTLE GEM IN THAILAND. THE RESORT IS DESIGNED AS A SELF CONTAINED VILLAGE COMPOSED OF VERY COMFORTABLE ,INDIVIDUAL HALES. THE SPA IS FABULOUS AND WELL PRICED, AND THE POOL IS WONDERFUL. EVERYWHERE THERE ARE SMALL ,YET BEAUTIFULLY CREATIVE TOUCHES---FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS EVERYWHERE. THE FOOD IS GOOD, THE SERVICE EXCELLENT, BUT DRINKS OF ANY KIND ARE A LITTLE PRICEY.THE BEACH IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT IT IS SO SHALLOW FOR SO LONG(1000METERS) THAT WALKING OUT TO SNORKLE IS IMPOSSIBLE. THE BOAT TOURS THAT TAKE YOU OUT TO GO SNORKELING ARE QUITE EXPENSIVE!! ABOUT $50 US PER PERSON!! I WOULD RECOMMEND THIOS PLACE TO ANYONE.

Pee Pee Island Village Beach Resort & Sp, Phi Phi Island, Loh Ba Gao BayWe had a fabulous time. We were unsure when we booked as nobody seemed to be able to confirm what the real star rating was and the actual information about the hotel was a little scarce. However, from arriving at Phuket airport we were met and taken to the port where we caught the ferry. At Tonsai a hotel representative joined the ferry and then took all our baggage off the boat for us when we arrived at the hotel by ferry. Whilst there was no pier we never got our feet wet and there was a welcome for us with a cocktail and a wet towel. The beachside villa we had booked was great and there was a huge shower, English TV channels, a place to sit outside under cover and the room was serviced every day. The beach was great, the water was warm and clean and great for children as it was shallow. We spent most of our time on the beach although the swimming pool was fantastic with a swim up bar. The service was impeccable and nothing was too much. Most of the staff spoke reasonable english and there was plenty to do. Of course it is an isolated place with no cars and it was what we wanted, total relaxation for a week, good food, wonderful massages at the spa and there was a pub with a great Phillipino band every night. It was easy to grab a water taxi and go into Tonsai and eat in the many restaurants. However the hotel laid on many buffets and fresh fish on most nights. there were lots of activities available including snorkelling, diving, visits to Phi Phi Le, where they filmed The Beach, visits to the island where the filmed the James Bond film the Man with the Golden Gun. beach volley ball or even joining in for a game of football with the locals!! We wish we had booked a few more nights there and were very disappointed to be going home, however the hotel turned out to be everything we wanted and it was without doubt 5 star quality. For some people it would be too quiet as they may want discos and pubs etc, but for us we wanted a ralaxing holiday, with good food and a traditional style of Thai culture. My only criticism is the easy chairs in the room could have been a little more comforable to watch TV and some of the beach chairs needed replacing. However these were really minor details.
Susana from Spain
Pee Pee Island Village Beach Resort & Sp, Phi Phi Island, Loh Ba Gao BayHotel is beautiful, location is paradise. There are no more hotels in this beach, you have your very own private separate bungalow which is huge and so well equipped (and we stayed in the standard one!), staff is extremely nice and smiling, you feel like you are in happyland. The beach is nice, you can swim from 9.30-3.00, then the water disappears but you have an amazing swimming pool for the rest of the day. You can do small trecks around as well. However, the activity center is very expensive and not very helpul and you are far away from the town to book with any other tour agent. Location is good for those who just want to relax. If you need action you should stay in the Long Beach area maybe or in the village (but i found it too crowded and too busy even in low season!!). The resort is very good. In low season you have to go to Phi Phi Don village by ferry and then you meet people from the hotel that will take you there. They charge you 200 bhat one way included in your check-out bill... Good price i guess but you share the boat with other guests. I recommend this hotel for those who want to relax and feel like in heaven.

The Phi Phi islands are some of the loveliest in Southeast Asia. Just a 45-minute jaunt from Phuket, these picture postcard islands offer the ultimate tropical getaway. Classic beaches, stunning rock formations, and vivid turquoise waters teeming with colourful marine life - it's paradise perfected.
There are two islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Lei. The larger and inhabited, Phi Phi Don attracts hundreds of visitors to stay on its lovely shores.
Yes, there was a tsunami, and yes, it hit Phi Phi hard. But in most places, you'd never know. Construction is still underway on the isthmus between Ton Sai Bay - the main landing area and commerce centre of Phi Phi Don - and Loh Dalam Bay. The other side of the island was sheltered from the worst and remains undisturbed. Along the northeast coast, the famed soft sand beaches - fringed by swaying coconut palms and vibrant coral reefs nearby - look better than ever. Bottom line: Hotels everywhere are welcoming guests.
